Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in Action at Dundalk Institute of Technology

How can someone without a traditional academic background access a Level 9 postgraduate programme? Through Recognition of Prior Learning, this applicant’s real-world experience, informal training, and professional practice were formally recognised and assessed, giving them access to a programme designed for industry specialists.

The applicant:

  • Held a Level 8 qualification in a non-cognate discipline
  • Had extensive experience in urban commercial & residential redevelopment
  • Did not have the formal qualifications required to meet entry criteria

With support from the RPL Officer, they mapped their learning to the cognate Level 8 Civil Engineering degree programme outcomes, completed an RPL application and interview, demonstrated competency through formal, informal, and experiential learning

The result was successful RPL entry into a Level 9 programme at DkIT.
