Recognition of Prior Learning in Practice: Exemplar from MTU Cork

We’re continuing our series of RPL Exemplars, highlighting how Recognition of Prior Learning is supporting access across Irish higher education.

This latest example comes from Munster Technological University, where a learner successfully applied for entry to the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Global Supply Chain Management by demonstrating equivalence to an Ordinary Degree (Level 7) through informal and non-formal learning.

With support from the RPL student mentor, the applicant developed a portfolio that mapped their learning to the Level. 7 programme learning outcomes. The process was supported by a template, and feedback from the mentor ahead of the academic assessment. This Exemplar highlights: 

  • how workplace learning can be formally recognised to support entry to higher education
  • highlights the importance of mentorship and structured reflection in developing a strong RPL application
  • Demonstrates how institutions apply quality assurance procedures to the RPL process
