RPL for Entry Exemplar: Dundalk Institute of Technology

Recognition of Prior Learning in Practice: Exemplar from DkIT

We’re excited to launch a new series of RPL Exemplars that demonstrate how Recognition of Prior Learning RPL is being applied in meaningful and structured ways across Irish higher education.

Our first example features Dundalk Institute of Technology, where a learner with a non-cognate academic background, a strong portfolio of creative industry experience and non-formal learning, successfully used the RPL process to gain entry to the Level 7 Certificate in Sound Design and Implementation for Creative Media.

By providing a detailed portfolio of showreels and supporting documentation, the applicant demonstrated prior learning equivalent to the programme’s entry requirements. This was assessed by the Programme Board using a marking rubric and points-based system.

This Exemplar helps to demonstrate:

  • How experiential learning can be assessed
  • Highlights the relationship between RPL procedures and quality assurance processes
  • Reinforces the role of RPL in broadening access

This is the first in a series of RPL Exemplars we’ll be sharing from partner higher education institutions. Each case provides real-world insight into how prior can be recognised and assessed to support learners to progress into and through higher education.
