Dr Josephine Finn

Dr Josephine Finn, an RPL expert and a leader in adult education for many years has very generously made her doctoral thesis available here.

Josephine spent her career in adult education. A graduate of Maynooth University she began by participating in the university’s outreach certificate courses delivered in her local community school. Ten years later, she finally began a bachelor’s degree. She graduated in 1994 and completed her professional studies in adult education a year later.

Like many adult educators, she commenced her career as a ‘freelance’ lecturer and worked in a number of higher education institutions, community education settings and industry.  In 2000, she took up a post in Maynooth University’s Department of Adult and Community Education,  as Head of Continuing Education. In this post she became responsible for the courses that had first opened up educational possibilities for her. Thus, she is a strong advocate of lifelong learning which she views as a means of cultivating human agency for personal, professional and collective action. In addition, she has a deep interest in educational policy development and the interlocking societal, cultural and economic circumstances that drive it. Her personal research focus is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and more generally inclusive pedagogies and educational equity in higher education.

In 2015 she completed a five-year term as Head of the Department of Adult and Community Education at Maynooth. She retired in 2019 and completed her PhD in the same year.  She continues to work as a freelance adult educator and specialist in RPL practice, policy and research.
